    GCSE results

Our class of 2023 have been celebrating our wonderful results today. A huge congratulations to all of our students on their hard work and accomplishments, no matter what grade they are awarded; the excellent accomplishments of St Mary Magdalene students are testimony to their hard work, and the dedication and support of their teachers.

Grades at 4 and 5 in English and Maths have significantly increased, crucial for future study, with 74% of our students achieving a grade 5 or above in English. The achievements of our students are significant given the level of disruption they have experience over the years and even within their final year of education in year 11. Our results match up favourably with those of the Local authority pre-pandemic.

A huge congratulations to our staff team. Not only through the daily timetabled lessons, but all the additional sessions they led before and after school, as well as weekend and half term sessions. I know our students are truly grateful and from a staff perspective, witnessing the joy in our students today, I can say that all the effort was truly worth it.

It was also pleasing to see a number of students also have met the grades they needed to meet their entry requirements for the next phase of their education.

  • Art Exhibition

    Published 13/07/23

We at St Mary Magdalene had a wonderful evening celebrating the end-of-year art exhibition of our talented year 11 and year 13 students. The celebration kicked off with a stunning violin performance by Cynthia (from 9SJS) and closing remarks from Ms Anderson, the Art Lead.

The temporary gallery space was filled with an amazing turnout of attendees. Witnessing our students' artworks in a professional setting was an impressive and inspiring experience. It was also heart-warming to see our students discussing their pieces with guests.

The exhibition was enjoyed by a diverse group of attendees, including students, parents, school governors, staff, and even primary school students who were visiting a secondary school for the first time. We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who came to support the students' accomplishments. Once again, congratulations to our talented art students for their remarkable work!

  • Kwame Alexander - Author Event

    Published 15/11/22

As a part of the Library and reading enrichment program, we have hosted an event where pupils from SMM and other schools from Royal Baroque of Greenwich had a lifetime opportunity to meet a poet, educator, publisher, producer, a New York Times Bestselling author of 36 books Kwame Alexander. We were thrilled to have in our school an individual who engaged so well with pupils to show the importance of a resilient-oriented mindset and share such experience and valuable knowledge with our students. It empowered, motivated and inspired them.

  • Exam Results 2022

    Published 21/10/22

At St Mary Magdalene we strive to ensure our students will go out into the world happy, courageous, resilient and motivated and these results represent the realisation of this commitment. We are very proud of all our students who took exams last Summer.

Our collective vision and ethos at the Koinonia Federation is to live as a family, grow in faith and be united in fellowship. We welcome the Department for Education’s decision against making over-simplistic comparisons with other local and national schools and its move to recognise the ‘uneven impact’ that Covid has had on schools. We are keen to highlight and celebrate the diversity of our school family; and this also means recognising the particular challenges our students faced during Covid, with nearly 60% coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Overall, we are encouraged to see the progress our students are making and pleased to share some of our most notable successes with 60% of our students achieving grade 4 or above in English and maths and 60% Grade 5 or above in English. Some individual subjects also did particularly well, with Music and BTEC Sport both performing well above even their aspirational targets. We congratulate all of our students on their successes, including those with particularly fantastic results: indeed, 79 Grade 8s or above were achieved.

The students who achieved these results did so in challenging circumstances during a global pandemic and they should be commended for their displays of courage, resilience and motivation in the face of such extraordinary circumstances that have been unseen in a generation. We are delighted to have welcomed many of them back to our newly completed 6th Form and for the others starting new exciting adventures we wish them every success in the future.

  • St Mary Magdalene Secondary Phase celebrates excellent results for its first GCSE cohort

    Published 31/08/22

At St Mary Magdalene, we have been congratulating and celebrating with our Year 11 students as they receive their GCSE results. In what has been a challenging few years for young people across the country, the excellent accomplishments of St Mary Magdalene students are testimony to their hard work, and the dedication and support of their teachers. We congratulate all of our students on their hard work and accomplishments, no matter what grade they are awarded. Many students have surpassed their own expectations; many have also triumphed in the face of enormous difficulties. We are very proud of all of our students.

We congratulate all students on their successes, and note the particular achievements of some individuals. Two students achieved all of their GCSEs at grades 7 to 9, seven students achieved more than half their grades at 8s and 9s, and twenty-five students achieved at least four grade 7s or above.

Whatever our students’ GCSE results, we know their determination and persistence has helped them to achieve these outcomes. We are proud of their efforts and look forward to welcoming students from St Mary Magdalene and other secondary schools to our Sixth Form in September.

  • DofE Bronze award

    Published 23/05/22

Over the course of two weekends, 28 of our students took part on their Bronze Expedition all passing with flying colours.

On the first weekend students embarked on a 16km trek through Epping forest before arriving at campsite. Despite some of our students over packing they all kept the morale high whilst working together to navigate a map with an instructor. Students worked in groups to set up tents, cook dinner and prepare breakfast and set up a camp fire for the evening.

The weekend was finished off by a 16km walk back to the station without the help of an instructor.

  • Humantopia

    Published 25/04/22

On Tuesday 19th April, a group of year 9 students had the opportunity to attend the Humanutopia event at The Royal Borough of Greenwich Professional Development Centre. This was attended by young people from 4 other schools in the borough.

The day was led by an inspirational facilitator Graham, who encouraged our students to feel more hopeful for their future, develop confidence, overcome barriers, consider their behaviour and understand themselves and each other better.

The day began by helping students consider their circumstances, past and barriers that have led them to who they are today. They then took part in a number of activities that were designed to empower students to work to overcome these barriers, think more positively about their lives and develop more confidence.

Although a challenging and thought-provoking day, feedback from students was extremely positive and we look forward to hosting Graham at school to work with the whole year group later in the term.
